The Smash Gyms Brazilian Jiu-jitsu program incorporates the most effective techniques of BJJ, judo, and wrestling.

BJJ"Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a grappling-based martial art whose central theme is the skill of controlling a resisting opponent in ways that force him to submit. Due to the fact that control is generally easier on the ground than in a standing position, much of the technique of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is centered round the skill of taking an opponent down to the ground and wrestling for dominant control positions from where the opponent can be rendered harmless. To control and overcome greater size, strength and aggression with lesser size and strength is the keynote of the sport. This is done by utilizing superior leverage, grip and position upon your opponent. Students of the sport gain a deep understanding of the workings and limits of the human body. This knowledge can be used to subdue and control an opponent with whatever level of severity the student chooses. The path to this knowledge is physically and mentally demanding. Students benefit from greatly increased physical fitness, problem-solving ability, self-knowledge of their body and mind and the many social benefits of working within a large group of like-minded fellow students as you learn and have fun together.

Many students first learn about Jiu-Jitsu through the great popularity of mixed martial arts (MMA) competition, where Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu technique is very prominent. Indeed, the beginnings of the contemporary MMA competition were largely tied up with proving the combat-efficiency of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. The practice of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu as a sport, however, is strongly separated from MMA. Daily classes do not feature kicking or punching. The focus is on safe grappling technique that can be done on a daily basis with no more fear of injury than any other contact sport." - John Danaher, BJJ Black Belt

"This review is for the Kids Martial Arts and Smash and Bash Bootcamp held at Smash Gyms. I was referred to Smash Gyms by a family member who trains in the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu class at Smash Gyms. The atmosphere in the gym is very welcoming to all. My son, who is 9 years old, took a liking to the Kids Martial Arts class on the very first day. His confidence, discipline, and knowledge of self defense has rapidly developed since enrolling in this school. He insists that he wants to continue to train daily. The instructors leading the Kids Martial Arts program do an excellent job working with the children. Parents can work out during the kids' class as well. I have taken the Smash and Bash Bootcamp while my son is training. This also is an awesome, challenging, and very convenient class for any parent wanting a great workout while their child is training. The instruction, workouts and gym have been a positive experience. I would recommend that anyone who is interested begin by enrolling in the free week trials offered at Smash Gyms." - Alex R

"Amazing, organized, and fun kids classes. Focuses on kids fitness and technique. Great kettlebell class. The instructor is very experieced and detailed. They also have kickboxing, Krav Maga, jujitsu, Zumba, and bootcamp classes. I can't wait till I can find time to do them all." - M. Kelly

"#1 The BJJ instructor is fantastic (as evidenced by the amount of dedicated students)! Awards! For both instructor and his students. Even if you aren't participating, this is a fun-to-watch class.
#2 The Krav Maga instructor is fantastic! 28+ years experience? You know he knows his craft. Very clear instruction on technique and goals. Non-intimidating style ensures you'll hone your skills, and enjoy doing it!
#3 Large, air-conditioned, clean and organized space that can easily handle the popular group exercise classes while two other martial arts classes run simultaneously.
This is a new location run by some dedicated people.
What do you desire? Martial Arts training? Self Defense training? Boot camp-style training? Weight training (there are Kettle Bell classes)? Increasing your cardio fitness while strengthening and toning your muscles? Smash has got you covered.
Don't take just my word for it, although you won't be disappointed. Go in and try it out. And bring your kids !"

"Smash Gyms offers an excellent Brazilian Jiu Jitsu program with excellent and knowledgeable instructors. Furthermore, the atmosphere is very welcoming, and we learn not only from the instructors but also from each other, as everyone here is willing to help each other out. Definitely the best place to go!

What attracted me to Smash Gyms is the breadth and depth of the Krav Maga and Jiu-Jitsu programs and the stellar reputations of the head instructors, IDF veteran and KM expert Opher Har-El and 3rd degree black belt Michael Jen. Having trained with Opher for nearly 6 years, I can tell you that the Krav Maga program at Smash Gyms faithfully continues the original lineage - based on fundamental and natural instincts, anyone can learn how to defend themselves and at the same time get in phenomenal shape.Opher's instruction is a real as it gets - his classes are intense, challenging, and a ton of fun for newbies through advanced students. The KM classes have a good mix of advanced students, new students and folks just dropping in; and everyone gets the same level of attention. There's no ego or meatheads, so the intimidation factor is very low - just a group of folks looking to improve themselves. You find yourself being pushed in ways that you never knew you could handle. Amazing that at the end of every class, it's impossible to wipe the grin off of your face.As far as Michael Jen's BJJ classes, I've had the chance to join a few weeks of classes, and his reputation and the reviews from the BJJ students hold true - his attention to detail, straight forward technique and his highly evolved "systems" make every class feel like a seminar. As important as the instructor cadre is the student body, and it's obvious that Smash Gyms attracts a high level of expertise from a wide variety of disciplines - there are regular black belt drops in from BJJ and Judo, world class wrestlers and grapplers, available to help you with your game - all for the asking (it's pretty common for folks to stick around and roll for an hour after class) and to take advantage of. Recently a team of 8 of Michael's students placed really, really well (4 golds, 3 silvers) in competition at Jiujistu-by-the-Sea, so that's the ultimate proof in the pudding! The gym is relatively new, and a really nice space - extremely clean; more and more equipment and class variety is added every week; there's even a nicely thought out kids play room off to the side, but it's more likely they will want to join the kids classes ;-)So if you are looking to continue your training at a higher level, start learning to defend yourself, or looking just to jump in for fun and fitness, you'd do really well to come down and take advantage of the fact that we are lucky enough to have such world class instruction and talent in our backyard; ask for Rudy and he'll take great care of you with no pressure, and an unlimited and no obligation free week!" - Jeff B

"This place rocks! The atmosphere is very friendly and casual, not intimidating at all. People (staff and clients) are friendly and helpful. Walk in the door and Rudy will help you out on what you need to get you started.I tried out the circuit training at noon, kickboxing, and zumba. Circuit training is great workout, small class and personal attention. Zumba is only as good as the instructor, and Raquel is energetic and fun. Kickboxing is pads and mitts, not the kick in the air stuff, good workout, and the instructors walk around to make sure people's forms are correct. Though your workout quality do depend on a decent partner. The only complain I have of this place is no shower, other than that, it's perfect. Krav maga is next on my list ." - Viola C.
